Stan Bear loves Dickie the Cat. She doesn't trust him. This is because of the earlier part of their relationship. He would smack her because he didn't know how to curb his enthusiasm. She doesn't like being smacked. From the beginning we tried to teach him the action of being gentle and I think it's finally sinking in. He loves to hug her. She tolerates that but the look on her face says, "HE'S GOING TO HURT ME. IT'S GONNA BE PAINFULIT'SGONNABEPAINFUL!" But then he just hugs her and it's all O.K. and then he gets excited and smacks her and then she bites (gently) or swats at him. I explain to him that she does that because she doesn't trust that he'll be gentle or that she doesn't like being hit. I love watching this cat/kid relationship sloooooowly evolve.
