Ultrasound II or Sunshine Robots

Thursday, February 2, 2012 = My first ultrasound experience wasn't fun; I was an emotional wreck. I told Mike, as we were walking to UNC Women's Hospital today, that I was going to pretend that the Ultrasound Tech was a robot so that I wouldn't be disappointed again with a frosty demeanor. Fortunately we had a different tech this time, in fact we had two. One was in training and the other was the seasoned tech who had probably worked in this field for decades. From the get go they were much more friendly and warm. I wasn't afraid to ask what we were looking at. They volunteered information as simple as, "There is the upper arm bone." It was much better. I even felt comfortable enough to say, "Hey, look Mike, it has your bald head!" Mike kept cracking funnies throughout the exam; I had to control my laughter. The techs were even enjoying Mike's jokes. It was a completely different atmosphere compared to the first experience, thank goodness. They started off by looking at the different organs: the heart, kidneys, eyes(lenses). Then at the bones: rib cage, legs, arms, fingers, toes. We even got a good view of it's belly and it's facial profile. Apparently the little one wasn't being very cooperative. First, it was upright in a breach position, almost in a meditation type of posture. Then it went over with legs outstretched and torso bent down in a forward fold, a natural yogi, I say. It went into every pose but the "right" one for seeing certain things. The tech even poked at my belly to get it to move and it just moved it's hands above it's head as if to say, "Stop bothering me!" They finally got to the last part to find out it's gender. :) (We will fill people in on this after the baby shower here has the big reveal; probably the first part of May.) When we were done the tech said to just wait and she and the doctor would look at the sonograms and then she'd be right back in to talk to us. When the doctor came in the lights were on (not gloomy and dark) and she said that it all looked good and that she was confident that we didn't have to come back in for another ultrasound to see if they could get a better look at the vena cava vein. (They were having trouble seeing it with the angles that the babe was sitting in.) But she said that everything else look really great and that all was well! Hooray!
